Description: Modern scholarship has often misunderstood the Pharisees and other scribal groups of the late Second Temple period by imposing simplified models of 'early Judaism.' These same models, combined with later ideas about 'early Christianity,' have also distorted how the conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees is interpreted. This book challenges those assumptions by situating the Pharisees firmly within the political history of Judea.

When the early Hasmonean rulers restored the Judean temple-state, the Pharisees emerged as scribes and close advisers to the regime. Their primary concern was the proper governance of the temple-state according to its politeia, the covenantal laws and customs that ordered its political and religious life. In practice, this commitment often placed them in opposition to expansionist high priests such as John Hyrcanus and Alexander Jannaeus, whose rule depended on military conquest and mercenary forces.

Rather than retreating from politics, the Pharisees consolidated their authority under Queen Alexandra Salome, functioning as the temple-state's leading legal and intellectual figures. As Roman control intensified and high priests became increasingly aligned with Roman interests, Pharisaic influence within the temple-state appears to have grown. After the Roman destruction of the Judean temple-state, however, the Pharisees largely disappear from the political history of Roman Palestine.
