The essays in this volume emerged from a conference held in May 2015 in Toronto, Canada, marking the 800th anniversary of the Dominican Order's founding and the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council's closing. The conference brought together Dominicans from across the globe as well as members of the broader academic community to reflect on the Dominican charism, the Order's relation to the Council and its role in the contemporary world. The essays are the fruit of their reflections and conversations. They include both English and French contributions.
The volume begins with the opening address offered by Bruno Cadore, Master of the Order of Preachers. In it he places two Councils in relief: Lateran IV and Vatican II, the former as the context for the foundation of the Order of Preachers and the latter as the context for the re-foundation of its ecclesial mission today. Section one explores the Dominican influence on the implementation of Vatican II's liturgical reforms. Section two investigates the essential role that prominent Dominican theologians played in the movement of ecclesiological renewal that precedes and finds expression in and beyond the Council. Section three mines insights from Dominican communities and theologians to articulate 'Future Directions in Religious Life'. Section four updates and applies insights from the work of Aquinas to questions in three separate areas of contemporary theology. Section five explores the role that prominent Dominicans played in the development of a new understanding of the relationship between Christianity and both Islam and Judaism. Section six focuses on issues relating to 'Dignity and Common Good" foregrounded by conciliar documents such as Gaudium et Spes and Dignitatis Humanae.
