This book encapsulates an important principle of adult education that the stories of the people who engage in the learning are at the heart of the educational process. Julie Thorpe sets out to tell the story of the Aquinas Academy from its inception in 1945 to the present day. She does this through the lens of the stories and aspirations of all those involved in the life of the Academy, most notable its founder, Austin Woodbury SM., affectionately known as ‘Doc’.
Those who have lived through this time or parts of it would find such references illuminating the past in a way that can only be done with the distance of time. The story gives the reader a sense of local Catholic heritage. It also provides a unique window into the overarching Christian/Catholic narrative especially in terms of the universal call to holiness etched into the documents of the Vatican II Council.
Personal reading for enrichment – a good news story.
