This book by Ken Hillman is written from the perspective of a practitioner who specialises in intensive care. His years of work in this field have prompted him to ask questions which keep the patient and his or her needs at the forefront of the decision. In his extensive work, he has observed that many elderly coming to the end of their lives in hospital are being over-treated, infantilised, subjected to unnecessary operations and given life-prolonging treatments without their wishes being taken into account. Consequently they are found to be facing death without dignity. Families are often forced into making decisions that are not to the benefit of the patient. The book is seen as an invaluable support for the elderly as well as their families as they explore gentler options that can be more sympathetic to the final wishes of people facing the end of their lives.
Hillman claims that a huge majority of people at the end of their lives want to die at home, but only a small number manage to do this. His book asks the all-important, Why? A Good Life to the End, is intended to spark debate, challenge the status quo and change lives.
