Like many converts, John Henry Newman had struggled initially with Catholic doctrine and devotion in relation to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Once he had overcome that hurdle, however, he became a champion of the Mother of God in formal theological reflection and in exercises of popular piety.
The meditations in this book are a treasure trove of his theological depth, put into a pastoral mode as preached for each day of the month of May in 1874, based on Marian titles in the Litany of Loreto.
