This book recounts the stories of seven U.S. missioners, three men and four women, who almost four decades ago, paid the ultimate price for the poor. In the countries of Central America where they ministered, they all challenged an unjust status quo in order to better the lives of those with whom they lived and worked. Although the lives of the martyrs, their back-grounds, and beliefs varied widely, they held a common faith and hope: to alleviate the suffering of the poor. The recounting of these biographies within their social and political contexts, offers a captivating and troubling story of their heroic witness.
Presently the Catholic Church is suffering from a variety of scandals and some of its leaders are more concerned with preserving the prestige and power of the Church as an institution than with serving the poor and the marginalised. Hence it is timely to recall these stories of radical faith and love. Such stories provide hope for re-building the Church on a foundation characterised by loving serving in solidarity with the poor and the marginalised.
