This book edited by Kelly Wahlquist, engages 12 leading Catholic women writers who reflect on the significant events in the life of Jesus from Palm Sunday to Pentecost. The reflections are framed within the six universal gifts of women which were identified by John Paul II through a range of Gospel encounters. Through the eyes of an imagined woman who watched Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, we witness how she conveyed the gift of receptivity. Through the hands of Veronica, who reached out to wipe the face of Jesus, we discover how sensitivity is present and can grow in our own lives. These gifts, along with generosity, prayer, maternity, and the Holy Spirit, come to life through the vivid portrayal of women who walked with Jesus. Their imagined stories are complemented by the real accounts of contemporary women who share their own stories of receiving and cultivating these gifts.
Each chapter unfolds in eight movements. The first one is titled; A Moment to Ponder and sets the stage for the theme of that chapter. The second movement provides the opportunity for Entering the Scripture where the riches of the relevant scripture are revealed while the third movement offers an invitation to Walk in Her Sandals. Here there is an opportunity to experience what it may have been like for women who lived and walked with Jesus. The fourth movement centres on Unwrapping the Gift where the author demonstrates a particular feminine gift and invites the nurturing of that gift in oneself. The following movement Reflect on the Meaning, offers insight, encouragement and inspiration for one’s own journey through personal stories. The sixth movement is focussed on Lectio and Meditatio which with a prayerful reading of the scripture and guided meditation there is an opportunity to be drawn more deeply into an intimate relationship with Jesus. Following this there are Questions for Group Discussions which provide a helpful tool to share experiences with others. The final movement is titled Walking in the New Evangelization. This section offers practical suggestions to grow in contemplative prayer and enhance one’s spiritual life.
