This book is a comprehensive anthology of the sayings of the Desert Fathers. These teachings, rooted in the oral tradition date from the early part of the 4th century. They were composed by monks who had retreated to the Egyptian desert to pursue a more radical living of the Gospel. The intention of the teachings was to guide newly aspiring monks who wished to follow this way of life. The sayings and tales set out the theory and practice of the life of a monk and hermit. John Wortley’s publication of The Book of the Elders provides a fluent and readable version of this important anthology allowing the reader to explore the wisdom of the Desert Fathers in a more systematic way than has previously been possible. This new publication represents a welcome addition to the growing corpus of useful translations and commentaries of early Christian and Byzantine texts, many of which have appeared in the affordable series offered by Cistercian Publications.
