These letters give us an insight into the wealth, depth, and variety of the ways Christian communities of the first century thought of Jesus, of the God of love whom he revealed, and of what it means to live as a disciple of Jesus, open to the grace of God’s Spirit. The Letter of James gives a glimpse of Judaism at its best with its burning focus on justice and care for the poor. The First Letter of Peter displays for our contemplation the essence of what it means to be baptised into the Christian community. The Letter to the Hebrews portrays Jesus as a high priest, mediating love from God to mankind and mediating our response back to God. The Letter of Jude and the Second Letter of Peter take us into the world of speculation and theology with their own special insight and inspiration. The Letters of John guide us in interpreting John’s Gospel and keep us focused on Jesus’ commandment: ‘Love one another as I have loved you’.
