Book of Everyday Prayers will be welcomed by adults looking for a book that will help diversify prayer experiences for children. In this one volume the authors have collated the old and the new; the formal and the informal; the long and the short; the experiential and the biblical. They have called on classical gems from saints such as St Teresa of Avila, St Catherine of Siena as well as prayers from Ireland, Mexico, Russia and other countries. Given the volume of prayers the book contains I think it is a book for adults to use with children as the need arises so they can relish the richness of each prayer, rather than be overwhelmed by so many words on so many pages. On page 169, the authors have included the Prayer to a Guardian Angel. When I referred to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (# 328-333) it seemed to me that one needs to be capable of deep theological exploration to understand the teaching of the catechism on angels. The content of articles 328-333 is in part a development of St Augustine's position that 'Angel' is the name of their office and not of their nature. Therefore the Prayer to a Guardian Angel on page 169 is not one I would choose for children in the midst of such rich alternatives that are available in the book.
