This book is written by Thomas Scirghi - associate professor of theology at Fordham University, New York. As the book’s subtitle suggests it aims to support those who preach in a secular age. To achieve this end Thomas Scirghi draws richly upon the theological tradition, classic literature, and contemporary culture. He begins with a discussion of the purpose of preaching and offers a theological sounding on proclamation. He then takes up several descriptions of the role of preacher in relation to the congregation noting that although the preacher needs to follow certain guidelines this must always be done through the authentic voice of each person. Scirghi also addresses current theological issues for the contemporary preacher. The second part of the book discusses the practical matter of preparing to preach and proposes a method of preparation by following a pattern of reflection, research, writing, and rehearsing. The third part focuses on two specific sacramental celebrations: funerals and weddings.
Recommended uses The soon to be ordained and those already ordained. Those who are involved in or aspire to the effective proclamation of God’s Word.
