When Catholic Means Cosmic offers an invitation to expand one’s faith vision leading to what the author David Richo refers to as a “Big Hearted Faith.” The book aims to show how the new cosmology fits with and enriches our sense of Catholic teaching and spirituality. Richo asserts that real faith finds expression in in generous and compassionate action. He succeeds in bridging the divide between religion and spirituality by reconnecting them and examining the marvels and challenges each brings to our faith journey. The book, presented in five chapters, explores the bigness of our faith anchored in the Cosmic Christ and the natural religious instinct which is intrinsic to our humanity. It then moves to examine the nature of faith, its developmental stages and some of the hurdles confronting a vibrant faith. This is followed by detailing some of the conditions encountered on the spiritual path including change, pain and aloneness. Some familiar religious themes like rituals, sacraments, prayer and the cross are then re-discovered within a cosmic perspective. The final chapter invites us to “take a stand with Jesus” and proposes that the Sermon on the Mount is the new paradigm of human relating. Richard Rohr describes it as a hopeful and visionary book which offers us a refreshing way of enlarging our view of what it means to be Catholic. Recommended use of the book: For personal spiritual development and enrichment of one’s prayer and faith. For parish and faith sharing groups to read and discuss. Sections of the text and quotes from the spiritual writers could be used in communal prayer and sacred rituals.
