This book by Brueggemann challenges the collusive silence which surrounds issues of injustice in our contemporary world. It is grounded in the many biblical accounts where marginalised people break repressive silence and speak against it. Brueggemann examines how maintaining silence where there is oppression and injustice, allows the powerful to keep control.
Throughout each of the 8 chapters which concludes with the Church as a Silencing institution, he convinces us that God is active and wanting us to act for justice. Readers are challenged and motivated to consider situations in our world like systemic poverty, racism, militarism and ecological devastation. It is around such issues that we have a choice – either to interrupt the silence or be part of the problem.
